Dr. Ketan V Shah

Born on 9th July, 1972 to Dr. V. C. Shah (General Surgeon) & Dr. Yashuben Shah (Gynaecologist) at Irwin Hospital,
Jamnagar; Dr. Ketan Shah did his Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary schooling at St. Mary’s High School,
Rajkot.
By the grace of wonderful teachers, who not only implanted educational but also moral values, he entered Pramukh
Swami Medical College, Karamsad for medical education. Thereafter, his credentials got him to the postgraduate
course of Orthopaedics and, under able guidance of legendary teachers, got the degree of Master in Surgery –
Orthoapedics (MS) with Gold Medal.
Wanting to get a super speciality, he decided to achieve the highest ordered qualification in Medical Education of the
country in the form of Diplomate of National Board (DNB). Known for its toughest standards & lowest percentage of
results (about 3 to 4 %), he was successful to clear the same and acquire that degree. It had been in year 2003 that,
Dr. Ketan Shah was the first & the only one in entire Saurashtra – Kutch to have possessed this super speciality
qualification.
With this as a back drop, he initially joined highly prestigious Shree G. T. Sheth Orthopaedic Hospital, Rajkot and
worked for 2 years. This gave an enormous exposure to variety of Orthopaedic and Trauma work. While acquiring
experience of the general Orthopaedic and routine trauma & fracture management, one thought always prevailed;
and that was the thought of doing something “special”, something “exclusive”, something “focussed” and something
“dedicated” in the sub – specialty of Orthopaedics. Seeing the magnitude of the elderly population, and most of them
suffering from crippling and devastating joint pain, he directed himself towards the “Care, Preservation and
Replacement of Joints” speciality of Orthopaedics. To pursue theoretical and practical excellence, he got extensively
trained by internationally acclaimed teachers at Germany, Australia, Singapore & Malaysia.
With zeal and enthusiasm, he started performing joint replacement surgeries in Rajkot (a relatively small city of
Gujarat), which was considered otherwise very unusual. At that stage of time, patients from Saurashtra suffering from
degenerative arthritis of the knees and hips use to travel to higher centres like Ahmedabad or Mumbai for getting
themselves treated. It was genuinely difficult from various fronts for vast majority of them, from within the city and
especially so, from across Saurashtra. He along with Prabhukrupa Hospital team, started succeeding in their
endeavour and the work started speaking volumes. The results that was offered was at par to any institute of national
or international repute. This infused a lot of confidence and hence the team got geared up for newer developments.
Since research had always thrilled Dr. Ketan Shah, and, being academically inclined, he started taking small but solid
steps in that direction. It is a matter of great pride that one stage of time, he was Director – All India – for Teaching,
Training & Education for Total Knee Replacement and Assistant Director – All India – for Research & Development for
Total Knee & Hip Replacement. He was instrumental in developing “patient specific instrumentation”, which has
revolutionized the surgical procedure. He had the honour of presenting lectures at various organisations, most
noteworthy being prestigious stages like Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society (APAS), Indian Society of Hip & Knee
Surgeons (ISHKS), in addition to various state level and national level Orthopaedic conferences.
Dr. Ketan Shah holds life membership for various associations. The most noteworthy being Indian Medical
Association, Indian Orthopaedic Association, Gujarat Orthopaedic Association, Bombay Orthopaedic Association,
Indian Society of Hip & Knee Surgeons & Asia Pacific Arthoplasty Association. He has delivered many lectures at
various platforms – nationally and internationally. He has been mentor and teacher to many junior & budding
Orthopods interested in the field of Arthroplasty.
Continuing his interest in development of technology, and wanting to stay in accordance with the time; and obviously
with the motive of giving the best to the society in Saurashtra, he has recently acquired the latest model of robot for
total hip and total knee replacement surgeries. It is for the first time in this geographical area, that such kind of
robotic joint replacement surgeries will be performed.
